Have you ever wondered what effect your actions have on the environment?

This was recently brought to my attention when I attended a National training workshop on the sustainable sport and the environment toolkit by the Uganda Olympics Committee on 27-28 April.

We enjoy  fresh and clean air every time we train. I for one love riding out in the fields because of the lush and beauty, and most importantly the clean air my horse and I breathe in.

Now let’s not wait for the Ugandan Government to take initiative; our community is not immune to the significant challenges across a wide spectrum of social, economic and climate changes. It only needs us to take a more proactive position and leadership role, include this in your day to day operations.

Your role as an individual isn’t easy but your lifestyle needs to change for the better, be the vision. 1. Don’t liter for heaven’s sake. 2. Pick up that water bottle that someone ignorant dropped, even airtime cards are trash for the paper does not decay right away. 3. Try using water sparingly if only you knew how many people out here, just in Uganda that needed clean water, you’d think twice. To be sincere, I can’t remember the last time I had a short shower. In the long run, you will enjoy the benefits of your actions.

Sports event organizers can ensure that; 1. There is a strategic plan prior to the events, putting in mind the wetlands, water bodies. 2. There is a ban on plastics at sport events because picking them up after the event hasn’t seemed to work at all. 3. Clear signage on preventive measures should be up and running all over the grounds for direction and also provide trash cans at event grounds. 4. Encourage use of actual paper bags (not Kavera). 5. Plant a tree or flowers in commemoration f the event. 6. Create additional feeder grounds for sports i.e. football, name it create pathways, because the cleanest existence and efficient is green.  7. Please hold events closer to public toilets or provide mobile toilets because the rate at which feseas are deposited contaminates the environment. 8. Restrict the use of equipment that pollutes the environment i.e Vuvuzela. 9. Have respect for all living things, we remember these from primary school; animals and plants, because all existence is contribution. 10.  Have awareness campaigns in order to practice what we preach.

In most cases, common sense is not common for all that’s why scientists endorse conserving our environment sustainably for the next generations to live a quality life. The International Olympic Committee supports the Uganda Olympic Committee’s commitment to contribute t the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (SDG’s)

“A lucrative plan is a strong one but a sustainable plan is a strong one.” George the poet.”
